In its history, this proverb is taught by Sunan Kalijaga in his effort to teach Islamic religion in Java. On one hand, it mentioned that we should always be sincere in helping others, no matter how small it is. On the other hand, in Javanese wayang stories, this proverb is included in one of the philosophies delivered by ‘Semar’ who is known as a clever and wise character. These philosophic values from ‘urip iku urup’ itself can create solidarity and familiarity in society.
