Monday, September 6 2022 – Djawa Soegih International Seminar was held online, attended by five keynote speakers: Prof. Datuk Dr. Sukiman Sarmani, Prof. Dr. M. Baiquni, M.A, Johan Raksowirdjojo, Suryakencana Omar, and Dr. Sutanto, S.Si., DEA. This seminar was held to discuss Djawa Soegih topic which means the rich Java. This seminar raises the theme “Cultivating the Past, Achieving the Future”. Besides the five keynote speakers, this seminar was also attended by Vice Governor of Central Java H. Taj Yasin Maimoen, the Mayor of Surakarta Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and the Rector of Sebelas Maret University Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, S.H., M.Hum.

The first speaker, Prof. Datuk Dr. Sukiman Sarmani, gave a presentation about Malaysian culture, Malaysian culture’s relation to Indonesian culture, and the development of Javanese-Malay diaspora science and technology. The second speaker, Prof. Dr. M. Baiquni, M.A, gave material regarding Javanese and Indonesian archipelago herbs and spices. Furthermore, giving education about human resources for the future, revitalization of ancient trade routes, and its future progress. Moreover, giving guidance to change the mindset from continental to archipelago paradigm.

Suryakenchana Omar

The third speaker, Suryakenchana Omar, gave a presentation about Javanese culture heritage in Singapore and global efforts to conserve, maintain and develop the Javanese heritage ecosystem. The fourth keynote speaker, Dr. Sutanto, S.Si., DEA gave a presentation about culture as a creative economy driving force in Solo city. Moreover, explaining the making of tempeh from ancient times to present days. 

After the presentation session, the questions and answers session was opened. Mrs. Nurpeni Priyati Ningsih asked Mr. Suryakencana regarding the existence of Javanese villages in Singapore. Mr. Suryakencana explained that there were several Javanese villages in Singapore, such as Tamu Kampung Jawa, Kampung Tempe, and a few more in the northern part of Singapore.

            Next, Mrs. Nurpeni Priyati Ningsih also asked Prof. Baiquni about the effort to entice the youngs to take pride of Javanese culture. Prof. Baiquni answered that one of the efforts to build the interest and pride of young people is to equip them with Javanese encyclopedias, so they have the identity that has been built by their ancestors. Furthermore, we need to give a mindset in education field such as cultural concept.
