Commemorate of the 77th HUT-RI by Diaspora and Indonesian Citizens in Washington, DC. Let’s go!

On Sunday, August 7, 2022, over 200 women from Washington, DC, and the surrounding areas took part in the “Cantik Berkebaya” march near the National Mall. 30 Indonesian cultural communities from Washington, DC, and the surrounding area participated in this program. “Cantik Berkebaya” is a form of support for the enlistment of the kebaya as a UNESCO Intangible Heritage. The Indonesian Embassy together with the Indonesian diaspora initiated this activity in Washington DC, United States.

This movement can help in the introduction of culture and the main thing is to bring this Intangible Heritage to be accepted by UNESCO. In addition, in order to welcome the 77th Indonesian Independence Day, this is an event that truly carries “Indonesia” as a form of love for the homeland even though you have to live or settle in someone else’s country.

The goal of this action was explained by Ayu Heni Rosan, the head of the Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) at the Indonesian Embassy in Washington, D.C. “Our predecessors left behind the cultural legacy of kebaya, which must be preserved. Women and the Indonesian diaspora in the US have shown their true role and contribution to the Kebaya Goes to UNESCO movement through this effort. The wife of the Indonesian ambassador to the US, Rosan Roeslani, Ayu, said, “We will also keep stepping up our efforts to promote the kebaya as a distinctive Indonesian fashion so that it is better recognized to the US public.

This is a component of a larger schedule of events for the 77th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia’s independence, which will culminate on August 21, 2022 at Wisma Indonesia in Washington, DC, with the Bazaar and Happy Stage.
