History of Wedang Ronde

For some residents of Central Java and Yogyakarta, you may already be familiar with this snack. Wedang Ronde is a food acculturated to Chinese and Indonesian cultures, consisting of “Ronde” or round dough inspired by Tangyuan (Chinese) dishes and hot and sweet Javanese “Wedang” sauce.

Although Wedang Ronde is the result of Chinese and Indonesian cultural accuracy, the name Ronde is believed to have come from the Dutch word ‘rond’ which means round. Added the suffix “je”, eventually, it becomes rondje or ronde which is more familiar to Indonesian tongues. In Dutch, the suffix ‘je’ means to denote a plural word.
