Centre of Excellence Javanologi Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta (PUI Javanologi UNS) held a dedication program to society titled “Javanese Speech Implementation as A Form of Strengthening Local Culture for Junior High School Teachers in Ngargoyoso Karanganyar”. This program is a dedication to society program that was led by Dr. Basuki Sumartono, M.Sn, and held on Saturday, September 10 2022, located in Seminar room on the 2nd floor, R.Ng. Ranggawarsita Building PUI Javanologi UNS.

Javanese speech is proficiency for a Pambiwara (Host) in mastering traditional ceremonies in the Javanese environment, such as marriage, funeral, meeting, banquet, recitation, competition, and other important ceremonies coherently according to the Pambiwara guide. The problems that were still happening today are: (1) Some Javanese-speaking local culture teachers still haven’t mastered Javanese speech techniques according to the rules correctly; (2) Haven’t yet mastered olah basa lan sastra Jawa; (3) Not everyone has understood paramasastra (phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax), discourse and pragmatics; (4) Not all of the Javanese teachers have mastered Hamicara (public speaking); and (5) Possess confidence in giving Javanese speech.

Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo, M.Hum., Ph.D. as the head of PUI Javanologi UNS gave a welcome speech and hoped for all of the participants to follow the program earnestly until the end so that the knowledge received could be taught to all of their students.

This dedication program presented experts as keynote speakers from PUI Javanologi UNS, Drs. Sutarjo, M.Hum. and Fajar Satriadi, M.Sn. Drs. Sutarjo M.Hum gave materials regarding Paramasastra Jawa and Javanese Literature, Medhar Sabda and Ngrumpaka, discussion, and Javanese Tembang and Gending practices. Whilst Fajar Satriadi, M.Sn, gave materials and practice about Javanese fashion, Javanese traditional ceremonies, Javanese personalities, and Paragan Pambiwara. The methods used by the speakers are direct practice with the participants, expected to increase their skills and proficiency in giving Javanese speeches to the junior high school teachers in Ngargoyoso, Karanganyar Regency, Central Java. The teachers who attended were enthusiastic and expressed their gratitude for holding the Javanese Speech workshop, hence this activity brought positive value and was certainly useful for the teachers.
